may book club

Let me start by saying that our book club has been so sluggish and we know it.  It started with a few of us not finishing books, then went to a few of us not even reading books, then went to several of us not even attending book club because we were ashamed.  I suppose it happens though, right?  Where groups go through lulls of sorts?  Just like a marriage or a friendship or ladies BINGO night.

We decided that our reason was because of long books.  Or tiring books.  Or that we're just too busy.  Or that we're just too sleepy.  Something.  Whatever it was, we were not motivated.  What were we motivated to do then?  Have girl time.  We still wanted to spend time together - to laugh out loud and to do other girly things like talk about boys, weddings, boobs, and ikea.

We had a few "nights out" this spring that were so much fun - they lived up to their expectations.  So much so that we've decided to make it a tradition, that in between every few books we will have a month where we just go out drinking wine and Shirley Temples (me).  We are really excited about this new special and lazy piece of Book Club.

Anyways, we got semi-back on track last month with The Great Gatsby.  Our idea was to read the book and then see the movie (opening weekend of course), and WE DID IT.  Well, some of us.  Those other girls were in Tahiti or some crap.  I stopped listening after the word "bikini."  Now okay.  I read the book back in High School which was a total waste of time.  I didn't understand a thing and I thought it was stupid.  Shocking, right?  But after reading it again I started to appreciate its value.  It's a great book - very easy read with a little bit of everything in it.

But the movie was awesome.  Better than the book.  We had to see it in 3-D (which was unintentional) and that was an issue.  I tell you what, if there is one thing wrong with the year 2013, it's 3-D capabilities.  Dumbest.  Invention.  Ever.  And as a professional scientist, I'm hear to say that I don't think it's good for your eyes.  Or for first dates.  (Think:  lines on forehead.)

^This was my favorite part.  Oh my gosh, Daisy's outfit was to die for, and Gatsby's love for her is so real in this scene.  I could watch it over and over.

Although we did all agree that the movie was a little too long, it was worth it.  The scenery for East and West Egg was perfect, the homes, the clothes and the acting were all incredible.  And the director, wow.  He made the whole thing so whimsical and dreamy.  And the soundtrack, oh the soundtrack.  It really made us want to spend a night in the roaring 20's.  (Just one)
